Real detachment is attachment with the Supreme

In the 5th Chapter Bhagavad Gita, Krsna speaks about detachment. He says it very clearly what is called detachment is actually yoga. Because you can’t be detached without being attached, in connection with supreme then you can be detached, conversely, if you don’t have that connection with the Supreme there is no question of detachment. This idea of renunciation is false, for those that are not attached to the Supreme it’s false. It is born of frustration but it’s not sustainable. Knowledge of the temporary nature of things or knowledge of the misery-producing nature of things, when you get detached is not sufficient.

In Vedic text this couplet jnana vairagya appears again and again, especially in the Sruti mantras jnana vairagya like two peas in the same pod, not even dominos, it’s just they are practically synonymous, where there is jnana there is vairagya because what is that jnana teaches, it teaches you there is no shelter in that which  is temporary. Like there is no substance in a mirror, there is no water in a dessert, it may look like water, there is by definition dessert is where there is no water, no water in the desert. And in a reflection, here is a mirror and here is a nice plate of Prasadam, go ahead have a feast. There is no substance in that reflection in the mirror, that’s just turn the angle of the mirror slightly and there is no reflection at all, even the reflection went away. They are all very circumstantial and insubstantial. Those that have knowledge of such things, there is detachment, but still tendency to want to enjoy is so strong so unless there is an actual shelter taking position of enjoyment you go back to the reflection or to the mirage or pursuing  happiness where there is no happiness where it’s all temporary whatever it is that you have.
